We kick off the CAJ national conference with a panel of top news executives, including Jennifer McGuire, chief of English News at CBC, Brodie Fenlon, senior news editor of Huffington Post Canada, Douglas Knight, CEO of St. Joseph Media, and Bob Cox, publisher of the Winnipeg Free Press and moderator Ted Barris, author and broadcaster, Centennial College journalism professor, gives a “State of the Industry” look at the core business of journalism in 2012.

Fenlon: 2012 is the year to orient toward digital. Audience is consuming content on mobile devices, when and where they want. They need to feel engaged in the news and how it's produced.

Fenlon: in many newsrooms, digital team has been the "ugly, pimply younger brother." We still have ways to go for integration.

Fenlon: Some print people with no digital experience have been put in charge of digital divisions. No one would ever do the opposite. Need to realize it's a whole different beast. Icouldm't immediately work in digital; took me some time.

Fenlon: Newspapers very hierarchical, with a lot of time and effort to climb up the ladder. Digital people, interns mostly understand social media, but they're at the bottom of the ladder and their skills are being ignored.
