The concept of a news cafe is quite different as it takes people away from their ordinary way of getting news
Corcoran: One way to improve on the daily deal program is to create data about consumers and give that information to clients to show them how the consumers use the information and what worked best for them.
How did you advertise the program?
Corcoran: We used several different modes. We used Metroland to advertise the deals.
Marlon Rodrigues: Mobile application gross sales as increased and is expected to increase all the way through 2016.
Rodrigues: In App purchases has increased over the past couple of years.
Rodrigues: It is interesting that in some ways, mobile apps are actually affecting the web. Our company builds programs across all applications.
Rodrigues: HTML5 creates a beautiful experience. Most money will not come from advertising on mobile. For example, the Hockey news ahs been around for 60 years they have 1 million online followers and only 100, 000 readers. But now we are seeing an increase in readership, simply because people know who they are and how to find them online.
Alvin Brouwer: How do you address the issue that most news websites that are free, yet these paper's create apps that makes readers pay for them?
Rodriques: What I think is that these paper's are trying to correct the mistakes they made in web. But this creates a negative experience on the user as they are only able to view a small amount of the content. It is much more aggressive experience if you are blocked from viewing content on a computer, whereas on a small phone screen, most people just tend to shrug it off. Instead of blocking content, you should put the user in the driver seat by allowing them to be able to subscribe to content, rather then allowing them to view it and then pulling back.
Brouwer: What are some of the mistakes you have made and how did you solve them?
Corcoran: We have made some mistakes, but the important thing to remember is to be prepared to make the mistakes but to make sure that that you resolve them quickly.
Cox: With this particular project of the News Cafe is small such as wiring of speakers, and the television screens where one screen premiers content slower than the other. One major mistake though was that some of the people in the newsroom still do not think that it is a good idea and actually feel alienated from the project.
